Competition routines are also performed at our annual Competition Showcase which is held at a local Theatre each year before the first competition. Click here for our Rules and Regulations.

Competition Company classes are offered beginning in September and continue until after the last competition is complete in the spring. Entry into Competition Classes is by invitation only and all competition students are chosen by the teachers. Competitions are held in March, April and May of each year. These extra classes are held on Fridays and Saturdays in the late afternoon and evening. VPDC generally enters 3 competitions annually.

VPDC RULES AND REGULATIONS

VPDC COMPETITION RULES AND REGULATIONS

To be in competition, the following rules apply:
  • Ballet students need only take ballet
  • Jazz/Lyrical students must take ballet and jazz as well as two technique classes per week (1 technique class for the Pre-Juniors)
  • Tap students need only take tap; Hip Hop students need only take hip hop.
Students must come to all classes in proper dress and have their hair in a bun for ballet or a pony tail (with all hair off their face) for other classes.  Students are expected to respect their teachers and their peers.  They must come to class ready to work hard and not disrupt the class.

The placement of every student and style of dance in groups, solos, duets, and trios, is decided by the teacher, not the student or parent. At a competition, students are judged on appearance, costume, and dance.  Acting is important in competition and you must be able to use facial expression to act the character in your dance.

Classes cannot be missed and you cannot be late for any classes. If you are going to miss because of illness, you must call the Dance Centre. All competition classes are closed classes unless the teacher invites parents to observe.

Competition students and parents must be flexible with time and schedule.  There may be times that a student may have to stay longer than planned or they may get out earlier.  Students must be available for costume fittings and extra rehearsals.  These could take place any day of the week.

There will be extra costs above the fees and costumes for students (i.e. – shoes, tights, make-up, wigs, props, entry fees).

You will be required to provide a copy of your Birth Certificate for entry into the competitions.

Parental commitment is important.  You must be responsible for taking the students to and from competitions.  Some competitions may be during the day.  You may have to take off school/work and be prepared to spend the whole day at a competition.

Competition will not be discussed during regular class time as this is unfair to students not involved in competition.  If you have questions or concerns, leave a message at the desk for the competition teacher to call you at a convenient time.

There will be a Competition Showcase some time in the spring.  Students must attend. This year’s Comp Showcase will take place on SATURDAY, MARCH 31st.  Please put this date in your calendars now.

Competition students must purchase a VPDC jacket and it must be worn at all competitions.  Orders will be taken in December.

Students must arrive a minimum of 1 ½ hours prior to their first number scheduled on each day of each competition.  Students must be ready to warm up one hour prior to their number.  Please do your hair and make-up (as much as possible) prior to arriving at the competition so you can put your costume on and start warming up.

Please remember you are representing VPDC. Unprofessional behaviour will not be tolerated and we expect the entire comp team to support all students.

Teachers reserve the right to remove a student who does not abide by the rules of competition and company classes.
